Major Bihar rivers cross danger mark, 100,000 affected

Incessant rains for the past three days in the catchment areas led the swollen Kamala Balan to breach its embankment on Friday in Madhubani inundating several areas, while other major rivers were flowing above danger level at various points affecting a population of nearly 100,000 in seven districts.

The Ganga, Kosi, Sone, Punpun, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak and Mahananda were flowing above the red mark in the seven districts of Madhubani, Jhanjharpur, Sheohar, Begusarai, Samastipur, East Champran and Gopalganj, state rehabilitation and relief department sources said.

State Water Resources Minister Jagdanand Singh directed engineers to keep close surveillance on the embankments where rivers were putting constant pressure following the rains.

Central Water Commission sources said Ganga was flowing 40 cm above the danger mark at Gandhighat in Patna, while Punpun had crossed the danger level by 156 cm at Sripalpur.

Similarly, turbulent Gandak crossed the danger point by 111 cm at Khadda.
