IT dept files reports against Advani, Sinha

The Income Tax authorities Wednesday filed in the Delhi High Court appraisal reports against 18 politicians and former bureaucrats, who faced trial in the Rs 650 million Jain hawala case, for allegedly acquiring disproportionate income between 1989-91.

The court had discharged them of the corruption cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation due to lack of evidence to support the allegation of their receiving money from three Jain brothers, as had been mentioned in their two diaries.

However, the Income Tax department had prepared two probe reports against 18 politicians and bureaucrats including Union ministers L K Advani, Yashwant Sinha and Sharad Yadav stating that their income during the relevant period was disproportionate to known sources.

Solicitor General Harish Salve submitting separate appraisal reports against each of them said the department had also prepared action taken reports in each case as per court's direction on the previous date of hearing.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Arijit Passayat and Justice D K Jain adjourned the matter till May 17 saying it needed more time to study the voluminous documents.

The matter was brought before the court in a Public Interest Litigation seeking expeditious probe into the alleged tax evasion by these persons.

The others facing IT probe include Congress leaders Arjun Singh, N D Tiwari, Buta Singh, K Natwar Singh, R K Dhawan, Krishna Kumar and Ranjit Singh, former Union minister Ajit Panja and Arif Mohammed Khan and former bureaucrats H K Khan, Prakash Bhatia and Basan Ravidhankne.
