Next hearing in Ayodhya case on April 20

The special court hearing the eight-year-old Babri masjid demolition case on Thursday fixed April 20 for the next hearing.

P K Chaube, the counsel for the Central Bureau of Investigation, once again pressed for the prosecution of all 49 accused, while the defence counsel, I B Singh, argued that since the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court in February last set aside the notification issued by the government to set up the special court, the charges against his clients should quashed.

Singh represents the then Faizabad district magistrate R N Srivastava and senior superintendent of police D B Rai.

Chaube, however, maintained that the high court had set aside the notification on technical grounds, while upholding the charge-sheets against the accused, including top Bharatiya Janata Party and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders.

Additional District and Sessions Judge S K Shukla scheduled the next hearing for April 20.
