31 burnt alive, 20 injured in TN mishap

At least 31 people, including four women and a child, were burnt alive and 20 others injured when a bus caught fire after colliding with a lorry at Vaikuntam in Salem district in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday night, police said.

The injured have been taken to government hospitals at Salem and Erode after being administered first aid at Sankagiri hospital.

Senior police and district officials are camping at the accident site.

The mishap occurred when the bus driver overtook a parked tipper truck and rammed into a lorry coming from the opposite direction.

On impact, the diesel tanks of both vehicles exploded charring the bus passengers beyond recognition, police sources added.
