The government is concerned about the shortage of public transport buses in Delhi, but is determined to make the national capital less polluted by introducing vehicles running on compressed natural gas, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said on Tuesday.
Replying to a question on what the government intended to do following mob violence in which five buses were burnt on Tuesday morning, Mahajan pointed out that the government was proceeding according to the Supreme Court order that only CNG buses should ply.
Mahajan said that provisions for 70 CNG pumps had been made in the capital. He explained that the government had made provisions for operating 68 CNG pumps and the other two had not yet been set up because of 'land shortage'.
He said that the government was allowing those who had applied for CNG to ply and all efforts were being made to issue permits to those legitimately entitled to them.
He emphasised that the government would not object to the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the tehelka scandal.
"The government will not object to a JPC probe, as demanded by the Congress, which is the principle Opposition party, Mahajan said.
