Border with China safe: Fernandes

Defence Minister George Fernandes Sunday said the border with China was quite safe and there was no cause of any concern.

Time to time border talks were being held to sort out problems and "our border is absolutely protected and there was no evidence of intrusion as such", Fernandes said while talking to newsmen at Raj Bhavan in Itanagar before leaving for New Delhi Sunday afternoon after a three-hour visit.

Fernandes said his main purpose of visiting Arunachal Pradesh this time was to discuss threadbare with the state government the question of improving road communication and he had brought with him the director general of the Border Road Organisation, Lt Gen A K Puri, for this.

Asked about the recent statement of Chief Minister Mukut Mithi on intrusions by the Chinese at least at four sectors of Tawang, Taksin, Dibang valley and Maja, Fernandes said there was no concrete evidence and such issues could be discussed at flag meetings between the authorities of both countries.

Fernandes had a two-hour closed door meeting with Governor Arvind Dave and Mithi soon after his arrival.

Coming out from the meeting the chief minister told newsmen that the Macmohan line being an imaginary line, sometimes the people used to cross the line without any ulterior intentions. But on many occasions, it had been reported that the people from other side were moving frequently to this side of the border which should be prevented.

Mithi said generally it was found that sometimes people were accompanied by uniformed men and said "we should be more vigilant.
