Body of possible foreign kidnap victim recovered

Police in Jammu and Kashmir said on Tuesday they had uncovered the remains of a body, which could be that of one of the four foreign tourists kidnapped by militants in 1995.

The remains were exhumed from a graveyard in Dooru village, 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Srinagar, a senior police officer said.

The officer said the grave had been located following information given by a militant arrested in connection with the 1995 kidnappings.

"It is too early to say anything yet, but we have recovered some bones which will be sent for DNA testing," he said.

Britons Paul Wells and Keith Mangan, Americans Donald Hutchings and John Childs, German Dirk Hassert and Norwegian Hans Christian Ostro, were kidnapped by armed gunmen in southern Kashmir in July 1995.

Childs managed to escape while Ostro was beheaded by his captors. The other hostages are still officially listed as missing, although any hope of finding them alive has long disappeared.

J&K authorities are likely to tread very carefully with the latest discovery. Last year, police claims that they had discovered the body of Paul Wells fell apart when DNA tests proved their claims to be false.
