Chandrika's party leads in Lanka

With a six per cent swing, the People's Alliance of Chandrika Kumaratunga in Sri Lanka was slightly ahead of the opposition United National Party in vote percentage, but managed a clear lead in the race for seats, grabbing 52 of the 74 seats, results for which were declared Wednesday.

According to latest reports, the PA has garnered 47.41 per cent of the votes, and the UNP is close behind with 41.47. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, is yet to win a seat, but has managed to get 6.8 per cent of the votes.

Election Commission sources said that of the votes counted so far, the PA got 1.87 million, the UNP 1.66 million and the JVP 0.25 million.

In terms of seats, the PA has won 52, the UNP 17, the Tamil parties Tamil United Liberation Front and Tamil Ealam Liberation Organisation two each and the EPDP one.

Curfew that was imposed Tuesday across the island nation following electoral violence was lifted Wednesday morning.

Counting of votes in Kandy and a few other electoral divisions will start after the EC takes a decision on complaints of violence and rigging.

The PA has got a majority in Gampaha, Matara, Kalutara, Galle and Ampara districts, while the UNP has a majority in Pollanorua and Anuradhapura.

In Colombo, the UNP is leading in 20 seats, while the TULF is leading in northern Jaffna.
