Tansi verdict 'not final': Jaya

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan general secretary J Jayalalitha on Wednesday appealed to party workers not to resort to self-immolation and other acts that would 'upset' her, saying that her conviction in the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation land deal case by a special court was not final.

Reacting to reports that a daily wager in Tiruchirapalli had attempted self-immolation in the wake of Monday's verdict, she said in a statement in Madras that there were enough avenues for further appeal that 'can prove my innocence'.

"Those who are trying to besmirch my name in the eyes of the people, are bound to lose in the end," she added.

Though the Madras high court had earlier acquitted her in the Tansi case, it was 'out of vendetta' that the Karunanidhi government went ahead with an appeal to the Supreme Court (which directed the special court to proceed with the trial), the former chief minister claimed.

She pointed out that her petition questioning the authority of the then governor in sanctioning her prosecution was pending before the apex court.

Jayalalitha alleged that the Karunanidhi government had hurriedly sought permission from the present governor for prosecuting her and commenced trial proceedings in the special court.

"My party will come back to power in the state after the coming assembly elections," she said.

She announced a medical relief of Rs 10,000 to the party cadre who attempted self-immolation.
