Protests justified, says Jaya

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalitha Tuesday justified as 'righteous' the widespread protests by her partymen against Monday's special court's verdict convicting her and five others in the Tansi land case and condemned their arrests throughout Tamil Nadu.

"I strongly condemn the action of the Karunanidhi government for indulging in large-scale arrests of AIADMK cadres and volunteers engaged in righteous protest after the special court judgement was delivered', Jayalalitha said in a statement in Madras.

Demanding the immediate release of her partymen, she said no action had been taken when DMK partymen damaged buses in Madurai recently but at the same time the government had made large-scale arrests of party functionaries throughout the state, including AIADMK chairman K Kalimuthu.

She said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was giving 'wrong and low figures' about the number of AIADMK cadres taken into custody, and alleged that it was part of his 'diversionary tactics.'

Several buses were damaged in various parts of the state and party volunteers held picketing agitations as soon as the special court pronounced its judgment convicting her, her close friend Sasikala and others in the case.
