Premises of persons involved in telecast rights grant raided

In an early morning operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation Monday raided the premises of some persons allegedly involved in the bunglings in grant of telecast rights for cricket matches, the agency sources said.

Sleuths of the agency's anti-corruption unit launched simultaneous raids in Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and other places, the sources said.

The sources claimed the premises raided also included those of some officials of private television channels.

The agency had earlier said some documents were being examined by the anti-corruption unit and preliminary enquiry or an FIR would be registered very soon to probe the allegations.

The final go-ahead in the case has been given by the legal cell of the agency, the sources said.

According to the sources, the CBI has alleged that Doordarshan sold television rights to private firms despite having all facilities to do the work itself.

They said several DD files pertaining to telecast rights of 1996 and 1999 cricket World Cups had been scrutinised by the agency and the anti-corruption unit opined that a case could be registered and a formal inquiry initiated.

While 1996 cricket World Cup was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the 1999 World Cup was hosted by England.
