Nityanand Swamy elected first chief minister of Uttaranchal

Onkar Singh in Dehradun

Nityanand Swamy was elected on Wednesday as the first chief minister of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal.

Pyarelal Khandelwal, the Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president who was sent by the central leadership to resolve the matter, announced this.

Swamy's name was proposed by Bhagat Singh Koshiari, himself a contender for the chief minister's post, and all 23 BJP legislators in the hill state supported him.

Swamy and the new governor of the state, Surjit Singh Barnala, will be sworn in at midnight of the intervening night of November 8 and 9.

Earlier, Union Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi held a special meeting at 1630 IST where he managed to bring around all the chief ministerial aspirants to agree on Swamy's candidature.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh BJP president Kalraj Mishra have arrived in Dehradun for the historic swearing-in ceremony.
