Elder statesman C Subramaniam dies at 90

Elder statesman and former Maharashtra governor C Subramaniam died in Madras on Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness, his family sources said.

Subramaniam was 90 and is survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

A chronic asthma patient, he became breathless on Monday night. The end came when he was being moved to hospital.

Subramaniam, who was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1998, had held important portfolios like defence, finance and agriculture at the Centre. He is credited with masterminding the Green Revolution in the late 1960s.

As finance minister in the Congress government in the then Madras state in the 1950s, he was considered part of the trio, along with Chief Minister K Kamaraj and Industries Minister R Venkataraman, that was responsible for the speedy industrialisation of the state.

He headed the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and in his last few years kept away from party politics, but was vocal in commenting on political affairs and issues of public interest, especially with regard to probity in public life.

His son, Rajasekhar, said his father had an uncomfortable night, but was responding to treatment. But he suffered much discomfort on Tuesday afternoon and was being taken to hospital, but the end came in the car itself. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, he added.
