Indefinite curfew continues in Imphal

The indefinite curfew imposed on Friday continued to be in force in Imphal and Imphal West areas, even as the state government contemplated ordering a magisterial inquiry into Thursday's exchange of fire between Assam Rifles personnel and armed extremists in which 10 persons were killed, official sources in the Manipur capital said.

The sources said the decision to inquire into Thursday's incident was taken at a meeting between Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh and representatives of the Joint Action Committee on Malom-Tulihal area killings on Friday evening.

They said that if the report of the magisterial inquiry was "not adequate, the government may order a judicial inquiry to probe the incident".

No untoward incident was reported from any part of Imphal and Imphal West districts on Saturday.

The curfew was relaxed for four hours on Friday evening to enable people to buy essential commodities, but otherwise police and security personnel have been strictly enforcing the curfew.

The state government has also agreed to make ex-gratia payments and provide pension benefits to the next of kin of the government employees killed in the incident, the sources added.
