Militants attack police training school in Baramulla

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In a serious development, militants on Friday evening bombed a barrack of a heavily-guarded police training school in Sheeri Baramulla killing a cop and injuring 28 others.

A senior police officer said the powerful bomb exploded late in the evening in a barrack where cops, undergoing training, were resting. One policeman died on the spot and 28 others were wounded.

The explosion triggered panic among the cops who ran helter-skelter for cover. There was absolute chaos inside the training campus. The injured were crying for help.

"We rushed them to a Baramulla hospital from where 18 had to be shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment," said a police officer in Baramulla after visiting the spot.

Condition of sixteen persons is stated to be critical and they have been shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

The other injured policemen are in a Baramulla hospital.

Senior police and security forces officers rushed to the spot immediately. Police and security forces promptly encircled the training school.

Sources said a through search of the school was made. Members of the bomb disposal squad were also on the spot.

The adjoining area was also searched by the security forces. Security around the camp has been further beefed up. No group has yet owned responsibility for the blast.

It may be noted that the state government had recently launched a drive to recruit persons from remote villages for the police force. State police chief Gurbachan Jagat has been personally touring the countryside to encourage the youth to fight militants by joining the police force.

At the same time, militants have warned the youth not to join the police force.
