Seven LTTE boats destroyed in sea battle

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam briefly commandeered a Russian merchant ship with 22 crew before abandoning it even as the Sri Lankan Navy destroyed a flotilla of seven LTTE boats in a fierce sea battle in the high seas off Mulliatuvu on Wednesday night.

Military spokesman Brigadier S G Karunarate said the fleeing LTTE cadres boarded the Russian ship proceeding to Colombo from Nagapattinam when their boats were attacked on Wednesday night.

Naval reinforcements were despatched to the area to augment the naval attack. In the confrontation, which lasted till the early hours of Thursday, two logistic craft and one attack craft of the LTTE were destroyed.

Other three crafts were badly damaged by the naval gun fire. One logistic craft presumed to be carrying a large quantity of fuel and lubricants was engulfed in fire.

The fleeing LTTE cadres had boarded the Russian ship and commanded the ship towards Mullaitivu. It was later abandoned by the terrorists after the terrorists managed to land off Mullaitivu and escape into the jungles.

The Russian ship was not fired at by the navy due to the presence of civilian crew on board, the spokesman said. The Russian ship with 22 crew members is now berthed at Trincomalee.

Elsewhere, three terrorists were killed in encounters with security forces while one soldier was killed and six were injured in various encounters in Jaffna.

In Batticaloa, terrorists kidnapped seven civilians from Kayankerni area. Three civilians managed to escape while four others were taken away in boats, according to villagers.
