Rabri Devi stakes claim in Bihar

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Rashtriya Janata Dal Legislature Party leader Rabri Devi on Friday night staked claim to form the government in Bihar after the eight-day-old Nitish Kumar government bowed out of office before the vote of confidence in the assembly.

RJD leaders swung into action after Nitish Kumar conceded on the floor of the House that he did not have adequate support in the assembly and announced his decision to resign.

Rabri Devi, accompanied by husband and party president Laloo Prasad Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mahabali Singh, met Governor Vinod Chandra Pande and produced letters of support from the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Krantikari Communist Party and some independents.

The governor is understood to have agreed to consider the demand.
