CPI pulls out of Left Front govt in Bengal

E-Mail this report to a friend

In a major political development, the Communist Party of India today decided to pull out of the left Front government in Bengal.

The decision was taken at the party's state council meeting following the Left Front committee's denial to field a CPI candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections slated for March 29.

A statement, issued on behalf of the CPI state council, however, said the party would continue to be a partner of the front.

The statement said that while the CPI had one seat in the Rajya Sabha from Bengal, Left Front committee chairman Sailen Dasgupta announced at a meeting today that the party would not have any chance of retaining it any more.

''Under this circumstances the state council has decided that it will not be possible for to remain with the state ministry,'' it said.

In the Rajya Sabha, the CPI has its lone representative in Gurudas Dasgupta who, the party claimed, had established himself as an able and skilled parliamentarian to the people cutting above partly lines.
