Playwright P L Deshpande is dead

Eminent Marathi litterateur and humourist Purushottam Lakshman (Pu La) Deshpande (81) passed away at 1430 hours Monday, at Prayag Hospital in Pune.

He had been admitted to hospital last Thursday. He was in a critical condition over the past few days and had developed breathing problems, which got complicated by pneumonia.

Dr Shirish Prayag of the hospital had told the media on Sunday that Pu La was heading towards 'multiple organ system failure' due to inadequate oxygen supply to various organs. The doctor had also announced that although Pu La's condition had not worsened since 1800 hours Sunday, his condition had been steadily declining earlier in the day.

His wife Sunitabai was at his bedside when he breathed his last.
