Britain not to seek amnesty for Peter Bleach

E-Mail this report to a friend

Britain would not seek amnesty for its former army officer Peter Bleach, who is undergoing life imprisonment in the Purulia arms drop case, a spokesman of the British High Commission said in New Delhi on Monday.

''We would not like to intervene in the Indian legal system,'' he said. The spokesman sought to clarify saying, ''if the Bleach appeal is not heard by the time of Straw's visit, he would urge the Indian government to speed up the appeal process. There is no way we would interfere in the Indian legal procedures.''

An earlier report from London had stated that Britain will press India to release Peter Bleach when Home secretary Jack Straw visits the country in September.

Bleach's appeal for amnesty gained currency after President K R Narayanan pardoned five Latvians, Bleach's accomplices, following an appeal by Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Russian leaders. They were set free on July 21.
