3 Pakistani high commission officials expelled

India today expelled three officials of the Pakistani high commission in New Delhi, external affairs ministry spokesman Raminder Singh Jassal said.

Pakistan's acting deputy high commissioner was summoned to the ministry's office this afternoon and told that Mohammad Khalil, Rana Mohammad Saghir and Mohammad Amin, staff members, had been found to have been indulging in activities incompatible with their official status, a euphemism for espionage.

Accordingly, the Government of India sought the withdrawal of the three officials by February 25.

Jassal refused to elaborate on the 'incompatible' activities of the staffers, saying such details are not given out. The Pakistani high commission also refused to comment on the issue.

Only last month, a staff member at the Indian high commission in Islamabad, P Moses, was brutally beaten up by some people. The external affairs ministry had charged that Moses was kidnapped and beaten by Pakistani officials. But the Pakistanis claimed to have caught Moses with some letters written in Urdu and asked him to leave the country. In retaliation, India then expelled a Pakistani high commission staff member from New Delhi.
