Seven militants killed in Manipur

Seven militants were killed in two separate encounters with security forces in Manipur's Thoubal district Wednesday morning, according to defence sources.

First reports reaching Imphal said three militants were killed on the spot in an encounter between the combined security forces and militants at Laphupat Tera area under Mayang Imphal police station Wednesday morning.

The encounter lasted for about 20 minutes.

There were no casualties among the security forces. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.

Some hours later, four armed militants were killed in another encounter between at Serou under Sugunu police station.

Large quantity of arms and ammunition were also recovered by the security forces, sources said.

A hotel manager was also shot dead by some unidentified gunmen Wednesday afternoon at his hotel at Nagamapal in Manipur's Imphal West district, police said.

Police said some unidentified gunmen came to the Eastern Star hotel and entered the manager's room at around noon. The gunmen shot him from close range killing him on the spot.

The victim was identified as Paresh Saha (45) of Hailakandi of Cachar district of Assam.

This was the second attack on Saha in a month.

In the first attack, some unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade inside his room in the hotel but he narrowly escaped, sources added.
