Seven railway officials told to go on leave

Seven senior railway officers have been asked to proceed on leave forthwith to facilitate an 'impartial and unbiased' enquiry into the Howrah-Amritsar Mail rail accident in which 46 people were killed, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee announced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

"In order to facilitate an impartial and unbiased enquiry, seven senior officers are being asked to proceed on leave forthwith," Banerjee said in a suo moto statement amid demands from the Opposition, especially Left and Rashtriya Janata Dal members, that there should be a discussion on the mishap.

The officers who have been asked to proceed on leave included the Chief Engineer and Chief Track Engineer of Northern Railway, Chief Motive Power Engineer (Running), Northern Railway, Divisional Railway Manager, Ambala, Senior Divisional Safety Officer, Ambala and the concerned Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer and Senior Divisional Engineer.
