Alert naval guards repulse intruder

Alert guards foiled an armed intruder's attempt to sneak into the house of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sushil Kumar in Delhi early on Friday morning, official sources said.

The sources said that the alert guards briefly exchanged fire with the intruder who fled under the cover of darkness.

One of the guards posted at the naval chief's high security residence at 12, Rajaji Marg, was injured in the incident. The naval commando, identified as Satbir, who sustained bullet injuries on his knees, was initially taken to the nearby navy clinic and later shifted to the Army Base hospital where his condition is reportedly `stable'.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered at the Tughlak Road police station, Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi range) Suresh Roy informed.

Roy said the 28-year-old Satbir, in his statement to the police claimed the intruder fired at him when he was patrolling in the backyard of the Admiral's residence around 0050 hours (IST).

Satbir said he fired 20 bullets at the intruder, Roy informed.

"We are investigating the matter and a manhunt has been launched to nab the intruder, the Joint Commissioner said.

Meanwhile, police sources said that a police team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police of the area had rushed to the spot immediately to inquire into the incident. Initially, naval officers did not allow the police inside as they were verifying the facts themselves, the sources said, adding the police team was later permitted to conduct the probe.

A police officer said they were investigating how the intruder got past the seven feet high fencing 'despite the security and patrolling all around'.
