India's moon mission still five years away

The Indian Space Research Organisation has undertaken preliminary studies to examine the feasibility of undertaking an unmanned mission to the moon and the country's polar satellite launch vehicle could be modified for this purpose, the Rajya Sabha was informed Thursday.

However, no plan has been chalked out yet to go to the moon, Minister of State for Space Vasundhara Raje said in a written reply.

She said it was expected to take about five years to send an unmanned aircraft to the moon, from the date of approval.

Preliminary analysis shows that the PSLV, with some modifications, is capable of sending an unmanned spacecraft to the moon.

As the instrumentation details were not worked out, it is difficult at this stage to estimate the expenditure on this mission, Raje said.

Apart from examining the feasibility of such a mission, the ISRO was also studying the scientific aspects, she added.
