Chhattisgarh cleared by Rajya Sabha

E-Mail this report to a friend

Parliament paved the way for the creation of a separate state of Chhattisgarh with the Rajya Sabha adopting the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2000 on Wednesday.

The Lok Sabha has already passed the bill.

The state will comprise 16 districts and have a population of 17.5 million.

Replying to a discussion on the bill in the Upper House, Home Minister L K Advani expressed hope that the state's creation would lead to prosperity in the region.

''It should be the responsibility of the new state government and the Centre to ensure that the wave of enthusiasm and joy that the creation of Chhattisgarh has generated does not turn into disappointment,'' Advani said.
