French order judicial probe into maid case

E-Mail this report to a friend

India today reserved its comment over the French government's decision to initiate a judicial probe into the assault on the 17-year-old maid of an Indian diplomat, stating it is not fair to reach any judgement at this stage.

''Let us wait for the outcome of the judicial investigation. Once a conclusion is reached, then we will be in a position to react,'' a spokesman of the external affairs ministry said in New Delhi.

The French government prosecutor began a judicial investigation against allegations of sexual abuse and torture of Lalita Oraon, who ran away from the residence of the first secretary of the commercial section of the Indian mission in Paris, Amrit Lugun.

However, so far no consular facility has been extended by the French government to the maid.

The spokesman said the Indian government is fully cooperating with the French authorities in the case.

The French investigation is intended to uncover who committed an act of violence with a knife which caused injuries to the maid. The prosecutor has nominated an ad hoc administrator for Lalita and she is under the custody of a special judge for the children.
