Inquiry ordered into Tripura massacre

Tripura government has ordered an inquiry into the November 14 massacre which claimed 18 lives.

A massive combing operation has also been launched by the police to nab the militants involved in the attack.

Director General of Police K T D Singh told newspersons in Agartala today that the Criminal Investigation Department had been asked to probe the massacre.

Meanwhile, counter insurgency trained Assam Rifles and Tripura State Rifles personnel continued their manhunt in West Tripura, the DGP said adding that the Border Security Force had been asked to seal the Indo-Bangladesh to prevent the militants from crossing over.

The state government has announced it would provide jobs to the next of kin of the dead. However, if a suitable candidate could not be found in the affected families, Rs 50,000 would be given as a one-time grant.

Outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force guerrillas gunned down 18 people, including two women and injured eleven people on November 14 in a village in West Tripura. The ATTF, however, has denied any involvement in the incident.

The 24-hour state-wide bandh called by the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee demanding imposition of President's rule and extension of Disturbed Areas Act in the state ended at 0600 hours today. The bandh passed off peacefully. The ruling CPI-M and the opposition Trinamul Congress had also called a 12-hour bandh separately yesterday.
