Retired Supreme Court judge V Ramasamy and former Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University vice-chancellor B P Rajan today joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham in the presence of party general secretary and former chief minister J Jayalalitha.

A party statement said the two separately called on Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence this morning and joined the party.

Ramasamy was at the centre of a controversy a few years ago with more than 100 members' of Parliament initiating impeachment proceedings against him for allegedly committing irregularities, including incurring excessive expenditure by furnishing his residence when he was the chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court. The proceedings, however, fell through.

After his retirement, Ramasamy had functioned as chairman of the State Law Commission during the previous AIADMK regime. His son Sanjay Ramasamy, who is married to actress Sridevi's sister Srilatha, had unsuccessfully fought the 1996 Lok Sabha elections on an AIADMK ticket from Sivakasi. He had been elected to the state assembly on a Congress ticket in 1991.

A renowned dentist, Dr Rajan is an active member of the Nadar Mahajana Bank Shares Retrieval Forum formed on behalf of the Nadar community in the state to repurchase the shares of the Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank from the Essar group.
