E-Mail this report to a friend

The Congress and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam today reached an agreement on sharing seats for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

The agreement was reached after a 45-minute meeting Congress Working Committee members Manmohan Singh and A K Antony had with AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence in Madras.

Dr Singh told waiting reporters that the Congress would contest 12 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats (39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Pondicherry).

He said the names of the constituencies the Congress will contest would be announced later by the party high command.

The two parties will campaign jointly and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address meetings in the state, he said.

The number of seats to be allotted to other constituents of the AIADMK-led front will be announced by Jayalalitha, he added.
