Vajpayee starts fasting

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday began his daylong fast at 0700 hours in New Delhi to spread the message of social harmony.

Immediately after commencing his fast, the prime minister went to the Gandhi samadhi at Rajghat to pay floral tributes to the Father of Nation on his 50th death anniversary.

He again went to Rajghat around 1100 hours and joined President K R Narayanan for the memorial service function.

The prime minister's fast will not come in the way of his routine work, officials said.
