'Lele needs to take a leaf out of South African cricket'

Date: Friday, January 22, 1999 2:38 PM

Subject: Lele's interview

Ask him to pay attention to the games he watches on television. Also his comparison to Donald and Pollock is another joke. The SA board has sufficiently rested Donald and Pollock, whereas people like Srinath are expected to play in all the games!

Man, I wish guys like these stay out of cricket.

The answers were more confused than the man himself. He, himself seems such a waste of space!

Subject: Interview with J Y Lele

Lele is the biggest thorn for Indian cricket (not that far behind is Jagmohan Dalmiya). These people want to fill the BCCI coffers with money by sacrificing Indian cricketers. There is no other reason for playing just four Tests in one year while appearing in more than 40 one dayers. There is no other team with such a huge one-day to Test ratio. The main reason other cricketing nations are not interested in playing India in Tests is this reluctance to organise Tests. If ever they organise it, they do it in India where the pitches are given in a platter to the players. I find only two players in the Indian team with the natural ability to play on fast wickets, namely Sachin and Rahul Dravid. All others have been spoiled on the useless wickets here.

If this guy (Lele) wants to improve Indian cricket, he needs to take a leaf out of South African cricket (the one he calls professional). The pitches here should be faster and more importantly bouncier. Also, the above mentioned ratio needs to be drastically brought down. I am more than 100 per cent sure that if Donald or any other pace bowler in the world is given this schedule, they will for sure break down.

Fielding not only saves matches, it wins them too. He doesn't know a wee bit about cricket, period.

Subject: Come on Lelesaab don't talk

Ridiculous is what we should say about these statements. Just the other day in a television talk show the man could not even justify the BCCI action on the betting scandal, so how on earth can you talk cricket? The technicalities of the game are easier to talk than to actually play? In all fairness the Indian team did not come good on the tour and the blame is on the whole team. Yes Azhar will take the blame for some of his moves which at some critical times cost us the second Test. But don't say that our bowlers are not fit. These guys have bowled their hearts out in all the games. Some bad umpiring also cost us the games. Don't blame our cricketers for no real fault of theirs.

Subject: The Jaywant Lele Interview

The Jaywant Lele interview that was run on January 22, 1999 was to me an indication of the knowledge of the game in the minds of the decision making members of the governing body of the BCCI. Some of the comments he made were really child-like and showed absolutely no respect towards the players' efforts and towards the game.

Why would someone in the position of Mr Lele want to make such ridiculous comments, especially after a long tour, is beyond my comprehension. If Lele is such a great analyser of the game, then why is he not the manager of the team? Why do we have people like Anshuman Gaekwad as manager? Does Mr Lele not understand that sitting in India, thousands of miles away from the action makes it easier for him to make couch-comments rather than make actual decisions on an as-needed basis? I will not be surprised if the comments he made concerning a few key performers on the New Zealand tour will bring down the morale and enthusiasm of these players.

Often we muse about why it is that even with a star studded team like ours, we still perform under calibre at times? We blame the reason on the team, but have we ever thought about how the comments of the kind that Mr Lele made in his interview will affect the psyche of our players. The team went into this year with the hopes of building a "team" that will bring back the World Cup. If Mr Lele continues to keep opening his mouth just to hurt the morale of our team members, then I do not even see a point in the Indian team going to play in England this summer.

For once, I have to agree with Mr Lele on what he says about the non-inclusion of Joshi in any of the Tests. Why was he selected if there was no intention to include him? Also, why doesn't Azhar explain the reasons why Prasad and Srinath were fielding in the slips. For that matter why was there no third slip on many occasions when Srinath and Prasad were inducing snicks from the batsmen?

I am tired of hearing people refer to Azhar as India's most successful captain -- he has been successful only in India and in subcontinental types of pitches as in Sharjah. How many matches has he won in England, Australia, South Africa or WI?

Subject: Cricket Interview/ Jaywant Lele

Frankly Mr Jaywant Lele sounds like every sporting team's worst nightmare. He comes out as the rabid fan who believes that he has all the solutions and that everything would be alright as soon as players start following his advice. Does he even pause to think about the pressure Srinath is playing under, when he knows that he hardly has any backup? That if he doesn't get quick wickets, the match is already half lost (sometimes even when he does).

Does he pause to think that Donald/Pollock are supported by the best fielding team in the world? Does he realise that even if Donald gets thrashed around five games in a row, his place in the team is not challenged?

Give the team the stability that it deserves. Let them become a team. Assure them that couple of bad performances are okay. Make them believe in themselves.

How do we allow our cricketing establishment to be run by this blustering nincompoop? I wish, unlike the Chandrachud report, he at least takes the time to read his own rantings in his interview. What a damning indictment of his own establishment and on himself who runs it. Even God can't save Indian cricket with such ludicrous men running the show. (Sigh)

All I have to say about Lele's interview is the following: It's one of the most incoherent, unintelligent in content, frustrating, atrocious, and at times self-contradicting interviews I've ever read. (How can such inarticulate people take such high positions is beyond me.)

PS. Am I the only person to feel so?

"It's pathetic that we have to field Srinath and Prasad in the slips. That means they are not fully fit. And catches are dropped. That means there must be some compulsion with the 'captain' that they can't field in the outfield. They are that much tired...." I am quoting this from the interview of Jaywant Lele. It is not only me who feels this but now the secretary of the team himself does feel this. It's really pitiful that we are not able to select 6 or 7 players who can face one complete ODI with full energy and enthusiasm. I really feel sorry about it.

Mr Lele you are reaping what you and your committee has sown. It's a shame that you mention this. What happened to you all when you were on the field selecting players for the national team? You all are biased. Accept this Mr Lele. Don't you think you have any Muslim players in the whole country. Give them a chance and see the difference. You don't have any right to comment on the captain of the team. What do you expect from him? He is doing his best. Did you not see his fielding and his batting on the ground in the recent test? Why do you blame Azhar? What do you do when you have all the facilities of being a champion but you are not even allowed to participate in the game. You feel helpless. I think that's what Azhar is feeling now. You all should quit office and give place to Kapil, Srikanth, Vangsarkar...You all are not fit for the show.

My dear readers, you all criticise what Azhar says? Is it still he who you need to blame now? You must understand that few of our players are almost unfit for the game. In fact who ever joins the team should be a player and should look like one? I once again repeat this is not gonna change unless we change from daal-roti to meat and beef...(just a simple suggestion!!!)
