Madras police detain Shiv Sena men

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Madras police today detained Thani Tamizhar Kazhagam leader K Nagai Mugan, a sympathiser of the Shiv Sena, which had threatened to disrupt the first cricket Test between India and Pakistan beginning at the M A Chidambaram Stadium on January 28.

Forty-four Shiv Sena activists, including state unit general secretary Then Maravan, have so far been detained all over Tamil Nadu as a preventive measure, police said.

Talking to reporters, Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi said the police are making all arrangements to ensure full-scale security for staging the Test according to schedule.

Referring to Wednesday's arrest of three Shiv Sena men who made a vain attempt to throw five pig's heads into the stadium, Karunanidhi said it was a provocative and anti-national act to instigate communal ill-will and appealed to the people of Madras to co-operate with the police.
