'Tamil is not the only South Indian language'
E-mail from readers the world over
Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 12:47:55 -0500 It looks awful for a person who has not been in the main fray of Indian cinema to comment about actors who really have the talent to go with acting. All of us know Kamal Haasan is one actor who can bring acting home. I cannot imagine an actor who has done more for Indian cinema in terms of acting than Kamal. It would be better if M F Husain sticks to art and not speak about areas he is not well versed in. It would be better if he did not paint nude portrayals of Indian goddesses because that to me does not epitomise Indian womanhood. Balaji

Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 10:12:19 -0800 It's a nice review without trying to tell whether the audience should see the movie or not. It reminds me of Khalid Mohammad in The Times of India when I was in India. I hope Khalid doesn't read this. Anyhow, it is a nice review telling everything about the movie without leaving anything for the audience's imagination.
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 17:18:53 EST What? Salman is not number 1!! Shahrukh in KKHH blew JPKHH and PKDYA out!
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 21:37:37 +0530 It's really nice reading.

Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 13:27:09 -0800 We stopped watching Kannada movies way back in the late eighties, when Rajkumar's movies started dwindling in number, thus bringing an end to decent and original movies. Subsequent crop of 'heros, heroines and comedians' have abysmally low acting talents. Death of some all time greats like Puttanna Kanagal, Udayashankar and Balakrishna, have left voids that have been filled by undeserving people. Rich producers from Andhra haven't helped either, they thrust untalented Malashri into the scene, and Kannadigas were left without any other alternative. Have you seen a three hundred kg female playing "Police Inspector," in movie after movie, fighting goons with her 'karate?' Go watch any Kannada movie made in the past three years, that is what you get to see. Then there is the cry-baby Shruti, whose speciality movies are tear jerkers of the proportions of Chirapunjee. Recently there was a spate of 'action' movies made in Kannada, a joke so to speak. The movie makers had absolute disregard for reality, had no grasp of action-movie techniques, and worked on a low budget. Have you seen black-cat commandos wearing steel spiked boots and walking around making noises that could be heard a mile away? That is what we got to see in Utkarsha, a moderately made rehash of movies of the likes of Die Hard and Siege. There is little hope for commercial films made in Kannada. Though every Kannadiga ought to be proud of people like Girish Karnad, Kasaravalli, Nagabharana and Rajendra Singh Babu, who's talents are unmatchable in the country. Srinivas Murthy
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 21:43:34 +0200 You know, I have been reading through your reviews, and I realise that in many cases, your reviews have been opposite to the film's performance at the box-office...eg, KKHH and Bandhan! Maybe you should find a reviewer more in tune with the audience.
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 18:12:24 -0600 I am Harrison staying in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and am interested in the world of movies. Recently I saw a movie, I think its name was Doli Saja ka.. something like that. I like the role played by Jyotika in that movie. I didn't understand the full movie, since I was watching with one of my Indian friends he tried to explain it to me. But still I appreciate the acting of the young actress. She has a lot of acting talent and beauty with grace. I have been quiet successful in giving a big push to young talent in this industry. I don't have any contact in your film industry. I would like to convey my best wishes to Jyotika. I would appreciate if you can get me in touch with her. I may be able to do something. I also like the content of your web site, keep it up. Any time you want to know about my industry here, I would be pretty interested in helping you. Harrison

Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 20:35:40 +0530 The article on Gulzarji is absolutely wonderful Thanks. More such articles please.
Date: 28 Jan 1999 17:44:08 -0500 I want to remind you of the flashback inside a flashback in the film Achanak or the song sequence flashback in Mausam. I think his inspiration for the song sequence flashback came from the movie Wild Strawberries by Ingmar Bergman. Gulzar is truly a great movie-maker. Pradeep
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 18:56:44 -0600 I just read the above article. It really is interesting to read the article. When I was a teenager growing up in India in the 1980s, my state did produce the most number of movies per year. If I remember correctly in 1982 or 1983 there were only three movies that were successful in the that year. The biggest of the stars took pay cut to help producers. The reason it is going to be interesting now is due to the ever more increasing influence of Hollywood movies, Bollywood movies, and above all television/cable television. I sincerely hope the movie industry recovers and concentrates more on the native themes rather than trying to copy Hollywood movies all the time.
