No talks with Pakistan now, says Fernandes

E-Mail this report to a friend

Defence Minister George Fernandes today said deliberations could be held with Pakistan only after Islamabad decides to end the proxy war and indiscriminate shelling from across the border in Kashmir.

Talking to reporters in Bhopal, he said the course of talks with Pakistan could be determined only after it agrees to abide by India's terms and conditions.

On the changed political scenario in Pakistan, he said a military takeover was not occurring in that country for the first time. "Although the army rule has not spelt any new challenges, the situation is being closely monitored," he said.

Fernandes said security had been intensified following the Kargil episode.

To a query over prisoners of war being held by Pakistan, Fernandes said there is a ray of hope for their release. But he refused to give any time frame.
