Congress wins two third majority in Delhi

The Congress has won a two third majority in Delhi, having won 51 out of 68 seats in the 69-member assembly.

Congress candidate Jaspal Singh defeated O P Babbar of the Bharatiya Janata Party to give his party the 47th seat and ensure a two-third majority.

The BJP won just 14 seats.

The Janata Dal has won one seat while Independents and others have won two seats.

Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj defeated college lecturer Kiran Walia of the Congress in the Hauz Khas constituency.

Delhi Congress president and chief ministerial candidate Shiela Dikshit wrested the Gole Market seat when she defeated cricketer-politician Kirti Azad by 5,667 votes.

Another seat that the Congress wrested was when Kiran Chaudhary, daughter-in-law of Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal, defeated Karan Singh Tanwar of the BJP by 2,626 votes in the Delhi Cantonment constituency.

The Congress retained the Minto Road and Jangpura constituencies, while the BJP held on to Sarojini Nagar and Kasturba Nagar seats.

In Minto Road, veteran Delhi Congress leader Tajdar Babbar won by a massive 14,765-vote margin over the BJP's Arun Jain while Tervinder Singh Marwah was another big winner. He defeated the BJP's Bir Bahadur by 11,992 votes in the Jangpura constituency.

Ram Bhaj retained the Sarojini Nagar seat for the BJP when he claimed a 1,528-vote victory over Mukesh Bhatt of the Congress; in Kasturba Nagar, Sushil Chaudhary won by 899 votes, defeating his Congress rival Ram Rattan Gupta.

Elections were held for 69 seats in the 70-member assembly. Polling in Nangloi Jat has been postponed after the killing of Samata Party candidate Ved Singh during the campaign.

Delhi BJP president Mange Ram Garg said the trends showed that price rise and development were the major issues.
