![]() RS mourns death of Gyan RanjanThe Rajya Sabha was adjourned on the opening day of the Budget session today after mourning the death of sitting member Gyan Ranjan (Congress) from Bihar. Earlier, 23 of the 28 newly elected members took oath of affirmation. Following the biennial elections, the strength of the Congress in the upper house has been reduced to 65. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has 44 members now. The House also mourned the death of two former members -- Purushottam Kakodkar, a freedom fighter, and S S Mariswamy, a journalist, thinker and social activist. Chairman Krishan Kant, in his obituary reference, said Gyan Ranjan had been associated with several activities including sports and was the founder of Prabhat Khabar, a prominent Hindi daily of south Bihar. |
