ULFA leader held by Bangladesh police

United Liberation Front of Asom general secretary Anup Chetia was picked up by the Bangladesh police from a Dhaka home on Wednesday following an Interpol alert.

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Chetia is currently being interrogated by officials in Dhaka. Other police officers said the Indian embassy in Dhaka has been informed of his detention. An embassy official would not, however, confirm that report.

Chetia went into hiding five years ago after Indian authorities issued a warrant for him for secessionist activities.

He jumped bail in Calcutta in 1992 after he was picked up in connection with the murder of tea estate owner Surinder Paul, the brother of the London-based businessman, Swraj Paul. He emerged in Geneva during a human rights conference last year, but fled when the Indian ambassador challenged him.
