ULFA dead serious about ultimatum

The banned United Liberation Front of Asom has said the one-month ultimatum given to the Assam government to stop the ''mysterious killings'' of its sympathisers should be taken seriously.

This follows the state government's attempt to term ULFA chief Paresh Baruah's earlier statement on the issue ''bogus''.

In a faxed message, ULFA publicity secretary Mithing Daimary reiterated the demand, and alleged that some armed youths have been helping the police and authorities in such killings.

The state government, for its part, terms the allegation as 'baseless and politically motivated'. It claimed the killings were largely due to the ongoing fratricidal war between the ULFA and its surrendered members.

Meanwhile, Governor Lieutenant General (retired) S K Sinha called on President K R Narayanan and is understood to have apprised him of the security situation in the north-eastern state. The governor is also believed to have expressed his concern at the infiltration from Bangladesh.

The issue of infiltration had figured in the recent secretary-level talks in Dhaka too.
