Montek, N K Singh shifted out in major bureaucratic reshuffle

In a major secretary-level reshuffle effected by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tonight, Revenue Secretary N K Singh was shifted as secretary in the Prime Minister's Office while Finance Secretary Montek Singh Ahluwalia was made a member of the Planning Commission.

Vijay Kelkar, chairman of the Tariff Commission, will be the new finance secretary while Javed Choudhuri, secretary (sugar) in the food ministry will be the new revenue secretary.

T K A Nair, currently secretary in the PMO, has been shifted to the Public Enterprises Selection Board as its member.

Other changes effected are: R P Sinha, chairman of the Inland Water Authority, goes as secretary, sugar, while Dipanker Basu replaces him.

Prabhu Sengupta , petroleum secretary has been made secretary in the Department of Defence Production.

Coal secretary Narayanan has been made secretary in the Department of Industrial Development and Public Enterprises.

Kamalnathan, secretary, industrial development, goes as secretary in the Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.

S S Boparai, secretary in the Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, has been made secretary, coal.

Ashok Parthasarthy, secretary, small scale industry, goes as Secretary, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Commission.

P S Bhatnagar, secretary, SC/ST Commission, goes as secretary, food processing, while C T Benjamin, secretary in the Minorities Commission, has been shifted in the same capacity to the Small-Scale Industry Department.

Leena Chakravrty goes on promotion as secretary, Minorities Commission.

D S Solanki, chairman, Central Excise and Customs, goes as director general, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau.

S P Mohile, who has been the senior most customs office in the country, will be the new chairman, excise and customs. At present, he is director general, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau.

On Thursday, the government had shifted out M K Bezboruah, who has headed the Enforcement Directorate since 1995, as commissioner of transport in the Delhi government with immediate effect. Replacing him in ED will be special director M C Joshi, who will officiate till a formal appointment is made.
