AIADMK now demands probe into Sun TV's affairs

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham, which has been demanding the dismissal of the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham government in Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday launched a fresh offensive against its political rival when its members of Parliament demanded that the Centre order a probe into the alleged irregularities committed by Sun TV.

Sixteen AIADMK MPs handed over a five-page memorandum listing the irregularities committed by Sun TV, to Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting lasted about 45 minutes.

Leader of the AIADMK delegation and former surface transport minister Sedapatti R Muthiah said Swaraj assured them of appropriate action against Sun TV, owned by the son of DMK leader and former industries minister Murasoli Maran. Muthiah, however, declined to divulge the nature of charges contained in the memorandum, saying it would affect a free and fair probe.

The AIADMK had earlier charged that the Madras kendra (centre) of Doordarshan was immobilised on the Tamil New Year's day following snapping of cable lines linking the kendra. The party had alleged that this was done deliberately to promote the programmes of Sun TV.
