Reservations will be extended beyond 2000: Vajpayee

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government would fully protect the existing reservations for schedule castes, schedule tribes and other backward classes, both at the Central and state level.

The government was committed to extend the provision of reservations beyond 2000, when they come up for renewal, he said.

The government has also decided to build a national monument at Chaityabhoomi in Bombay, on the lines of Raj Ghat, in honour of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

He said the ministry of welfare will now be called the ministry of social justice and empowerment.

According to an official release, the prime minister assured that the proposed commission to review the Constitution did not envisage changing its basic structure.
