Pak euphoria over Ghauri reveals fundamentalist angle

Pakistani newspapers and defence and political commentators are quite thrilled by the Ghauri missile test. But the most excited seem to be the fundamentalists who are demanding that Pakistan should now go in for a nuclear explosion.

There is no official explanation as to why this missile has been named Ghauri but the general conviction is that it is named after Shahabuddin Ghauri who attacked India in the 12th century.

Pakistanis consider him a hero who established Muslim rule in this region. He was an Afghan. The current euphoria about Shahabuddin Ghauri thus gives a fundamentalist angle to the Ghauri missile.
