Karunanidhi warns of destabilisation moves by political rivalsTamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today told the state assembly that attempts were being made to destabilise his government by creating disaffection in the police force. He said some Union ministers had recently stated that there were methods other than use of Article 356 of the Constitution to destabilise the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government. He said he was not concerned over how long his ministry lasted, but how effective his government was, more so because he came from the 'self-respect movement'. He was replying to a special mention made by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislature party leader S Tamaraikani and four others in the House over the road blockade by family members of police personnel at Virudhanagar and other places on March 31 to press their 10-point charter of demands, including better service conditions. What happened at Virudhanagar could be part of such a design, he said, and added that a party, which was not represented in the house, had incited the police to resort to agitation. Those who incited the police did not realise that "it may end up in the army", he cautioned. Asserting that his government would not tolerate indiscipline in the police force, he said all facilities provided to central government employees were made available to state government employees, including police personnel.
