Winter is kicking in, but in a year dominated by a deadly global pandemic, chills and thrills are largely limited to staying indoors.

One can always take refuge in the world of movies though where winter wonderland sets the stage for cozy romances and warm woolens.

Be it scenic Kashmir or majestic Swiss Alps, Bollywood's trendsetting winter wear is the A to Z of style and snug.

Sukanya Verma looks at its winter fashion over the years.

Shammi Kapoor, Professor

Think snow, think Shammi Kapoor yowling Yahoo on the top of his voice from a mountain top.

A good chunk of his career as leading man involves serenading the leading lady against the snow-clad vistas of Kashmir.

More importantly though the dancing star sure knew how to dress for the occasion.

Like lending his smart western look a touch of local by way of that embellished cap.

Shashi Kapoor, Sharmeelee

Younger bro Shashi Kapoor's suave style hits it out of the park in a belted military green leather jacket paired with a red polo neck.

Sharmila Tagore, Vyjyanthimala, Asha Parekh, Saira Banu, Hema Malini

The '60s It Girls gave many a fashion goals in their chic winter wardrobe.

Sharmila Tagore's turtle neck and scarf in monochromes and pops of red (An Evening in Paris), Vyjayanthimala's classic cardigan paired with a salwar suit, Asha Parekh's trademark pom pom hats (Teesri Manzil), Saira Banu's super feathery sleeves (Aadmi Aur Insaan) and Hema Malini's ornate jacket offsetting her bright sari are some of the signature looks of the era.

Babita, Nanda, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Jab Jab Phool Khile

Back when Bollywood beauties channeled their inner Santa's elves, thank goodness it didn't catch on.

Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala, Jewel Thief

Few understood the ABCs of accessoriSing like Dev Saab, his sartorial flamboyance is tailor made for winter fashion.

But in Jewel Thief, his co-star Vyjayanthimala's red and white pom pom sewn sari teamed with an ochre yellow coat steals the show.

Functional and fashionable was never more striking.

Rishi Kapoor, Chandni

Rishi Kapoor and colourful sweaters remain synonymous with each other.

Considered his greatest fashion trademark ever, the star sported quite a hip collection throughout his reign as romantic hero.

Amitabh Bachchan, Kabhi Kabhie

Bachchan's angry young man dominates much of his popularity, but equally noteworthy is his contribution to style.

Those super stylish fur collared overcoats and turtlenecks in Kabhi Kabhie haven't aged a bit.

Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee, Kabhi Kabhie

Staying true to his aesthetics, Yash Chopra's intergenerational relationship drama evokes beautiful images of characters and clothes.

Who can forget Raakhee and the Big B snuggled up before a fire against Kashmir's white snows in furs and fuzzies?

Amitabh Bachchan, Silsila

Ditto for AB and Rekha's bundled up avatars in the gorgeously shot Silsila.

Amitabh Bachchan, Trishul

But even his modest half sweater in Trishul left an iconic impression on screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

And here's some ritzy proof to show a leopard can never change its spots.

Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz, Aap Ki Kasam

Speaking of animal print, remember Mumtaz's furry coat and Kaka's woollen style with leather accents as they canoodled in snow during the title song of Aap Ki Kasam?

Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan, Jeet

Another fur (hopefully faux) enthusiast can be found in Karisma's honeymoon ready bride even as blazer donning Salman Khan happily looks on.

Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya

The high boots and fur tradition continues in Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, which paired her opposite Abhishek Bachchan whom she was briefly engaged to.

Juhi Chawla, Darr

Cartoon print sweaters like Juhi's add to the excitement of winter dressing.

Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty, Dhadkan

Dharmesh Darshan's Dhadkan doesn't just channel vintage Bollywood for emotions but also fashion as evident in Shilpa's fur coat on sari combo.

Shah Rukh Khan, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Ideal for winters and groovy to look at, SRK's leather jacket is just one of the many, MANY trendsetting aspects of Aditya Chopra's blockbuster classic.

Shah Rukh Khan, Mohabbatein

The superstar's tied sweater and knitted jumpers in muted hues as Mohabbatein's music teacher on a romantic mission gathered no less notice.

Bobby Deol and Kajol, Gupt

Bobby-Kajol's idea of layers cuts a chic, cuddlesome picture.

Hrithik Roshan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Throw the guy in a sack and he'll make a style statement.

Snip off his knitted jumper and you've got a dapper Duggu evoking all khushi no gham.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

Ash juggles drama and elegance by teaming her traditional mirror work shawl against a striking red sari in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic triangle.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jab We Met

Bebo's fur collared, cropped denim jacket lends to Geet's brand of ebullience in Jab We Met.

Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Bundled up in bomber jackets and beanies is fashion that's relatable and with it.

Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, Haider

Warm, woollen phirans are the way to go for the stars of Haider's strictly Kashmir setting.

Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, Rockstar

Nargis flaunts a more vibrant, embroidered offering of the region while Ranbir fights the chills in a reliable, four-pocket winter jacket and knitted skull cap.

Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra, Student of the Year

Pops of designer couture against good ol' snow stays true to Karan Johar's vision of larger-than-life fashion.

Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, Dum Lagake Haisha

In complete contrast, there's a sweater-clad Ayushmann and Bhumi portraying small-town winters at its most authentic.

Aditya Roy Kapoor, Fitoor

The classic kurta and pashmina shawl never go out of style.

Alia Bhatt, Raazi

Cute, comfortable and full of intricate embroidery, Alia's desi poncho packs in both style and substance.

Vicky Kaushal, Manmarziyaan

Vicky Kaushal's funky hoodie is sure to appeal among the young and restless just like his 'Fyaar' fundas.
