The Aamir Khan show is back in town, and the makers of Dhoom 3 seem to have suddenly woken up to the fact that he’s the only one in the cast who really matters. (Then again, apparently Aamir is acting as consultant in terms of the movie’s promotions. Hmm.)

The new theatrical trailer, therefore, focusses on Aamir and Aamir alone: Aamir as a young boy learning magic, and Aamir as a flamboyant superstar criminal. A bit of a surprise is Jackie Shroff as Aamir’s magician father/mentor, and Khan himself looks to be in dashing form — sprinting down the side of a skyscraper, et al.

The interesting thing, however, is that the film looks to have a nicely twisty cat-and-mouse soul to it, what with the police — Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra — setting a trap for Aamir and Khan doing his best, through sleight-of-hand and farcical disguise, to waltz through and grab the cheese anyway.

There’s a nice line about how sleight-of-hand always benefits the magician, and not the audience — even though the audience always thinks they’re the ones winning.

Katrina Kaif jumps around a fair bit, Abhishek refuses to smile, and Uday pops up in a few shots but never gets to speak.

So could Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Dhoom 3 be the first film in the franchise to have a helluva plot and not just lots of stunts and slow-motion shots? After this trailer, we’re certainly curious.
