The year 2013 was a good year for cine-goers and ended with the biggest blockbuster Hindi cinema has ever seen so far.
Here's a look at the 10 biggest hits of 2013.
10. Special 26
Box office collections: Rs 67 crore
Special 26 was quite a departure from the hardcore commercial movies that Akshay Kumar has been doing lately and the audience gave it their whole-hearted approval.
In a relatively realistic outing which boasted of some tongue-in-cheek humour, Special 26 scored well at the box office.
The film reinstated the fact that Akshay can be versatile when he chooses to be.

9. Aashiqui 2

Aashiqui 2 was the biggest surprise of the year.
When the songs first came on air, inevitable comparisons were made with the first Aashiqui movie and many wondered if they would match the hit soundtrack of the original film.
The music worked, and how!
Mohit Suri's storytelling gave way to two upcoming stars -- Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor.
8. Race 2

The sequel factor worked big time for Race 2, which wasn't as terrific as its predecessor, some might argue.
But its action sequences, hot stars, exotic locations and, most importantly, chart-busting songs (Pritam again) meant that Abbas-Mustan could shrug away their earlier disappointment called Players.
The film struggled to touch the 100-crore mark but an excellent weekend made Race 2 the first 100-crore film of the year.
7. Grand Masti

This film could have very easily turned into a mega disaster.
But even though most critics termed it crude and vulgar, those very qualities proved to be a strong selling point.

No one expected this Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film to enter the Rs 100-crore club.
In fact, for a biopic, even Rs 50 crore business would have been considered an achievement.
However, the Farhan Akhtar-starrer defied all odds and went on to become one of the most loved films of 2013.

The year clearly belonged to Deepika Padukone as yet another one of her films -- Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela -- entered the Rs 100-crore club.
Ranveer Singh found a firm footing with the film as well.
Ram-Leela did well in the opening weekend with over Rs 50 crore coming in.
It sustained well for four weeks, and emerged as the highest grosser for Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a director.

Hrithik Roshan-starrer superhero hit Krrish 3 was yet another big player of the year.
The film managed to break the myth that Diwali releases don't do too well.
However, while trade figures indicated that collections were in the Rs 170-180 crore range, the Roshans claimed that the film earned Rs 250 crore.

Deepika Padukone came close to scoring her first Rs 200-crore film with Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani early in the year.
Other than Ranbir Kapoor (the film's protagonist), music composer Pritam won accolades for his work in the film too.
The film scored a record for the highest collections ever on a non-holiday release (before Dhoom 3 eclipsed it) and continued to attract viewers despite competition from many other films.

2. Chennai Express

It's not to say that Deepika did not get her own Rs 200 crore movie.
She did, with Chennai Express, and she was fabulous in it.
There may have been a hint of controversy around its eventual box office score, but no one contested the fact that Shah Rukh Khan had indeed enter the Rs 200 crore club with this Rohit Shetty film.

The big daddy of all star vehicles arrived right at the end of the year.
Dhoom 3 was always expected to score big but the ease with which it raced ahead of expected figures left many a naysayer speechless.
The film went on to create numerous records -- best first day collections, first weekend and first week with fastest Rs 100-crore, Rs 150-crore and Rs 200-crore collections.
Aamir Khan has since been crowned the first entrant of Rs 250-crore club.
