Renowned Bengali actress Sumitra Mukherjee, who acted in more than 500 films, including a Bengali version of Devdas, died of a heart attack at her residence in Kolkata this morning.
Mukherjee, 58, is survived by two sons. She had been ill for quite some time, sources said.
Mukherjee began her film career in the late 1960s. In 1979, she played Paro in Dilip Roy's Bengali version of Devdas. Soumitra Chatterjee played the title role while superstar Uttam Kumar played Chunnilal.
She was the late Uttam Kumar's leading lady in a number of films, including Ogo Bodhu Sundari. This Bengali version of My Fair Lady was Uttam Kumar's last film.
Mukherjee, who won a number of film awards, including the Bengal Film Journalists Association award in 1985, had lately taken to the small screen and was acting in a number of serials and telefilms.
