The beginning
Not all filmmakers feel obligated to entertain. Some strive to achieve a lot more than just that. One such auteur of cinema is Shyam Benegal. His films have made a relentless effort to explore the complex and diverse
facets of human nature against a shifty socio-cultural make-up.
Born in Trimulgherry, Secunderabad, Benegal showed a flair for filmmaking as a young boy after his father, a photographer, gifted him a camera. Inspired by the glorious works of visionary filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and first cousin, Guru Dutt, he grew confident about the profession he wanted to take
up.
After attaining a degree from Hyderabad's Nizam College, Benegal began his stint at an advertising agency, where he shot a wide array of advertising films and documentaries.
