The finest roles in history

2. Terry Malloy
Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront

Ah, this has to be controversial. Marlon Brando's name isn't used to being prefaced by the number two, his work in this mammoth Elia Kazan film provoking the world to call him the best actor. Ever.

Terry Malloy isn't just another defiant dock-worker. He is a scathingly real character, a frustrated and dilemma-straddling youth elevated inadvertently to the mythic rank of Hero.

Brando seethes, burns, glowers and simply sets the screen alive. Also, with all apologies to Mr De Niro, he presents us with the best taxicab scene of all time.
